Based on the background story, a design was created to express an extremely cold texture through material selection.
I strive to achieve the cinematic realism and interactive expressions between objects seen in Game of Thrones.
The interaction between the prop and the environment, such as melting snow and frost adhering to the sword blade.
These aspects constitute the core of realistic props, emphasizing rationality.
Creating a cold iron texture, steel weapons may develop frost at low temperatures. When steel is exposed to humid environments, its surface tends to react with oxygen and moisture, forming iron oxide rust. This oxide layer may resemble frost.
I typically analyze rust in three layers:
Surface layer: The outermost layer of rust is porous, with a reddish-brown or orange-yellow color and a peeling texture.
Middle layer: Denser, black or dark brown in color, with an uneven surface.
Inner layer: Closely attached to the metal substrate, black or dark gray in color.
An analytical production approach is essential for creating authentic material textures.
The carving and design of the sword hilt, drawing inspiration from the prototype in the movie, underwent secondary creation and deep carving.
This is also the most challenging aspect of this sword, and I employed a clever crafting method.
Simply utilizing the noise feature in ZBrush, I was able to achieve fine and beautiful surface patterns.
